Police Bike Unit Gets New Wheels
POINT PLEASANT BEACH — Keen-eyed residents might have noticed that the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department’s Bike Unit has a new set of wheels as of last week.
The bike unit, which consists of 10 officers and focuses on community outreach, recently received a full complement of bicycles and uniforms, courtesy of a $15,000 donation from the head of a Lebanon, New Jersey-based supplement company.
Caesar DePaço, the bicycle donor and CEO of Summit Nutritionals International, has a history of philanthropic activity related to law enforcement, according to Point Pleasant Beach Police Lt. Paschal Drew, who oversees the bike unit. He said that this is not the first time DePaço has donated to the department.
“He’s very giving to law enforcement in general,” said Lt. Drew, “especially when it comes to things like the bike unit. He had previously donated us bikes within the last six or seven years, and — as you can imagine — they’re being ridden 24 hours a day. And we had actually spoken to him about what the older bikes were looking like, and he graciously committed to buying 12 more bikes with no problem.”
“We have 12 bikes, and right now we have 10 officers who are assigned to them,” Lt. Drew said. “The two extra bikes would be spare bikes, so if a bike were to go down, we have a spare that’s readily available to be ridden. They’re brand-new bikes; all Haro brand. They came from Shore Cycling Sports out in Brick on Mantoloking Road.”
A native of Portugal, DePaço said that his main goal in donating to police departments in New Jersey and internationally is to affirm his support of law enforcement organizations as well as to “the rule of law” as a whole.
“I have chosen to stand resolutely with law enforcement, not in pursuit of recognition, but out of an unwavering conviction that civilization endures only through the vigilance of those who safeguard order, uphold honor and defend the rule of law,” said DePaço.
